Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the American Global Leadership Scholarship are given below
- Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree if applying for a Master’s program
- Candidates from any country can apply for the Online Master’s Program
- Good Academic Record
- Scholars must maintain a 3.0 CGPA in the first two semesters of the Master’s Program.
- Candidates with leadership qualities are highly encouraged to apply.
You are NOT eligible to apply if:
- U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.
- You are enrolled in or have already begun any post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the United States.
- You graduated from secondary school earlier than 2026.
Deadline
The last date to apply for the American Global Leadership Scholarship 2026 is 15th January 2026 for the Undergraduate Degree Program, and for the Graduate Degree Program, you can apply anytime.
AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Instructions
- Complete and submit the Common Application with all required documents per the AU international instructions checklist before January 15, 2026.
- Create your applicant portal when invited to do so.
- Submit a bank letter and the completed and signed AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF), each confirming a minimum of US$4,000. These can be uploaded via your applicant portal. See examples of bank letters.
- Submit your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test score results before January 15, 2026. Please have official English proficiency score reports sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia. Note: Students cannot submit their own results.
- If you are applying through a program supported by EducationUSA or if you are a past FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient from the U.S. Department of State, please provide a letter from your EducationUSA center’s adviser confirming your candidacy. You may request that the letter be sent to jtomczak@american.edu as a PDF.
- If you are not selected as one of the finalists, you may still be considered for admission to American University, Washington, D,C and eligible for partial merit scholarships.
