An internship is a temporary position within a company or organization, usually lasting for a few months. Internships are often taken by students or recent graduates as a way to gain practical experience in a particular field or industry. Interns may be paid or unpaid, and they typically work part-time or full-time hours.
To list an internship on a resume, follow these steps:
- Consider the relevance of the internship to your job goals. If the internship is directly related to the job you are applying for, it should be included in a prominent position on your resume. If it is less directly related, it can be included under a separate section such as “Relevant Experience” or “Additional Experience.”
- Use a clear and concise heading for the internship section. A good heading might be “Internship Experience,” “Internships,” or simply “Internships.”
- List the internships in reverse chronological order. Start with the most recent internship and work your way backward.
- For each internship, include the following information:
- Name of the company or organization where you interned
- Location of the internship (city and state)
- Dates of the internship (month and year)
- Title of the internship or a brief description of the role you played
- Key responsibilities and accomplishments during the internship
- Use bullet points to list your responsibilities and accomplishments. This makes it easier for the reader to quickly scan your resume and understand what you did during the internship.
- Use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and accomplishments. For example, “Designed and implemented a new database system,” “Conducted market research to identify potential clients,” “Assisted with the development of marketing materials,” etc.
- Keep the information about your internship brief and to the point. You don’t need to include every single detail about your responsibilities. Focus on the key highlights and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job you are applying for.
