Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship: The Selection Process Step by Step
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) supports gifted and committed young people from Germany and abroad. International students apply through a separate online form for basic (study) funding or for doctoral funding. The official FES application page describes these steps:
- Online form. Give your personal details, background, motivation and social engagement. FES replies within 2 to 4 weeks with either a rejection or a request for documents.
- Documents. Shortlisted applicants send a detailed CV, certificates (including university entrance qualification and enrolment certificate), a motivation letter and two reports from lecturers. You have 3 weeks for documents and up to 6 weeks for reports.
- First interview. A subject-focused interview with an academic advisor.
- Second interview. An interview with a member of the selection committee.
- Decision. The committee meets 8 to 10 times a year. You hear the result within one week of the meeting.
The full process takes about 3 to 7 months. Travel costs for interviews can be reimbursed on request.
Tips for a Strong Application
- Show that you share the core values of social democracy: freedom, justice and solidarity.
- Give concrete examples of volunteering, such as work in student groups, unions, NGOs or local communities.
- Ask lecturers who know you well for your reports, and give them enough time.
- Apply early. FES says the earlier you apply, the better.
- FES gives special consideration to first-generation students, women, people with a migration background, STEM students and students at universities of applied sciences.
