 Chalmers University of Technology Tuition Fees for International Students

Chalmers University of Technology charges around 15,400 to 20,200 USD per year for international students in both bachelor’s and master’s programs. When studying abroad, it’s important to consider other expenses like housing, food, transportation, and books.

To help with these costs, Chalmers offers scholarships for international students. There are three different scholarships available, each with its own requirements and benefits. These scholarships can make studying abroad more affordable and are worth exploring to find the right fit for you.

Types of Scholarship Offered at the Chalmers University of Technology Scholarships 2023

The Avancez Scholarships 2023 in Sweden 

75% tuition fee waivers awarded by Chalmers. These scholarships are available to all fee-paying students. “Avancez!” is the motto of the university founder William Chalmers.

Description
Chalmers will award a number of scholarships available to all citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are liable to pay tuition fees for Swedish university education. The exact number of scholarships is determined on a yearly basis.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also the home university’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers Master’s programs.

Fields of study
The field/s of study to which the scholarships will be awarded is determined annually by the University President.

For the academic year 2023/24 the field of study is unrestricted, but it will be distributed according to targeted areas of education determined by the university management, based on the total number of applicants per each area of education from the previous academic year.

POET (International Programme Office for Education and Tra​ining) offers 75% tuition fee waivers funded by the Government of Sweden and administrated by Chalmers. These scholarships are available to all fee-paying students.

The IPOET Scholarships 2023 in Sweden 

Description
Chalmers will be offering approximately 35 IPOET scholarships in 2023.
The scholarship is funded by the Swedish Council for Higher Education, to prospective fee-paying students. The scholarships are administered and awarded by Chalmers.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also home university’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers Master’s programs.

Fields of study
Unrestricted – all of the current Master’s programs at Chalmers.

Available to

  • 1st year Master’s program applicants
  • Citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are required to pay tuition fees for Swedish university studies

Amount

  • A 75% reduction of the tuition fees (4 semesters/2 year program)
  • Students who excel during their first year of studies may receive an increased reduction, which covers 85% of the tuition fees during the second and final year of studies
  • No funds are transferred to the scholarship laureates

The Sievert Larsson Scholarship 2023

Description
The Sievert Larsson Scholarship Fund (within Friends of Chalmers) offers 100% tuition fee waivers and living expenses awarded to students with citizenship from Thailand.
Selection
The scholarship is valid for studies in Engineering master’s programs. In the first instance we want to support students who come from financially vulnerable homes and who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in Sweden.
Fields of study
All master’s programs at Chalmers, except the Architecture programs.
Available to
  • Citizens of Thailand only
  • Students with a completed or soon-to-be completed Bachelor’s Degree, with a minimum grade of 3.0 (CGPA) from a prestigious Thai University, with a high position on international ranking lists.

Two different versions

  1. Full tuition fee waiver (covers 100% of the tuition fees) during the 2-year program (4 semesters).
  2. Full tuition fee waiver (covers 100% of the tuition fees) and 230 000 SEK for costs of living during the 2-year program (4 semesters).

It is possible to apply for both versions of the scholarship via the scholarship application portal. Please make sure that you apply for the scholarships in your order of preference. Additional information
If you are shortlisted for this scholarship you will be prompted to submit additional documents via email to an assigned member of the scholarship assessment team. If you are shortlisted, an email will be sent to you between March and April. The shortlist will not be published or announced beforehand.

The Volvo Group Scholarship Program 2023

100% tuition fee waivers awarded to students with Indian and Chinese citizenship.
The scholarships include possibilities for internships during the summer, a final Master thesis project, mentorship and possible employment at Volvo Group.

Description
2 scholarships will be awarded to citizens of the Republic of India and/or the People’s Republic of China.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also home university’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers’ master’s programs.

Fields of study
Applicants to the following Master’s programs are eligible to apply for the scholarship:

  • Mobility Engineering
  • Sustainable Electric Power Engineering and Electromobility
  • Software Engineering and Technology
  • Data Science & AI
  • High-Performance Computer Systems

Available to

  • 1st year Master’s program applicants to one or several of the above-listed programs.
  • Citizens of the Republic of India and/or the People’s Republic of China who are required to pay tuition fees for Swedish university studies.

Amount

  • Covers 100% of the tuition fees (4 semesters/2 year program)
  • In addition, the Volvo Group intends to have close contact with the students during the two years of study. Support offered could include summer internships, a Master’s thesis project, mentorship and possible employment at VG (employment is subject to VG evaluation at graduation).

The Chalmers MasterCard Scholarship 2024 in Sweden 

(Will not be awarded in 2023)
Awarded to a master’s program applicant from Central or South America (including Mexico). A 280 000 SEK reduction of the tuition fees during the master’s program (4 semesters/2 years).

Description
The Chalmers MasterCard Scholarship is awarded biennially to a Master’s program applicant from Central or South America (including Mexico).

Please note that you will not be able to apply for (select) this scholarship in the scholarship portal. Meanwhile, all eligible applicants who submit an application via the portal will be considered.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also home university’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers Master’s programs.

Fields of study
Unrestricted, all of the current Master’s programs at Chalmers.

Available to

  • 1st year Master’s program applicants
  • Citizens of a Central or South American country who are required to pay tuition fees for Swedish university studies

Amount

  • 280 000 SEK reduction of the tuition fees during the master’s program (4 semesters/2 years).
  • Engineering Master’s programs at Chalmers cost SEK 80 000/semester (SEK 320 000 total program fee for 4 semesters). Therefore we recommend that prospective Engineering Master’s applicants who are citizens of one of the above countries apply for this scholarship.
  • Architecture Master’s programs at Chalmers cost SEK 105 000/semester (SEK 420 000 total program fee for 4 semesters). Therefore we recommend that prospective Architecture Master’s applicants who are citizens of one of the above countries apply for Avancez or IPOET instead, as they are financially more beneficial.

Background
Chalmers MasterCard is a program for alumni, employees, students and friends. A part of the Chalmers MasterCard turnover is used to fund the Chalmers MasterCard Scholarship.

The US Friends of Chalmers Scholarships 2023 in Sweden 

100% tuition fee waivers are awarded to students with US citizenship.​
The scholarship is funded by US Friends of Chalmers and administrated by Chalmers, for studies on Engineering master’s programmes.

Description
Two scholarships will be awarded in 2023 to citizens of the United States of America.
These scholarships comprise full tuition fee waivers. The scholarships arefunded by friends of Chalmers in North America.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also home university’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers master’s programs.

Fields of study
All master’s programs, except Architecture and urban design and Architecture and planning beyond sustainability.

Available to

  • 1st year Master’s program applicants
  • US citizens who are required to pay tuition fees for Swedish university studies

Amount
Covers 100% of the tuition fees

The Adlerbert Study Scholarships 2023

100% tuition fee waivers funded by the Adlerbert Foundations and administrated by Chalmers, for students who are citizens of one of 143 specified countries.

Description
Five scholarships will be awarded in 2023 to students who are citizens of one of 143 countries (link below). The scholarship comprises a full tuition fee waiver and is funded by the Adlerbert Foundation.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicants’ relative academic excellence, which primarily includes weighted average grade but also the home University’s stature (including position on global ranking lists) and priority order of the application for Chalmers’ master’s programs.

Fields of study
Unrestricted – all of the current master’s programs at Chalmers.
