The Oesterreichische National Bank (OeNB) has introduced the Klaus Liebscher Economic Research Scholarship to replace its previous economic research awards. The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) has replaced the economic research awards previously conferred by its Economic Analysis and Research Department with the newly established “Klaus Liebscher Economic Research Scholarship.” This Scholarship gives outstanding researchers the opportunity to contribute to the broad range of research activities at the OeNB’s Economic Analysis and Research Department by providing consultancy services.
The Scholarship program targets Austrian and international experts with a proven research record in economics and finance and with postdoctoral research experience. Applicants need to be in active employment with a research institution in Austria or abroad and should be interested in broadening their research horizons and expanding their personal research networks in an environment of increasing international research mobility.

Scholarship Coverage
Here’s a simplified summary of the scholarship coverage:
- Consultancy Fee: Recipients of the Klaus Liebscher Economic Research Scholarship get a consultancy fee for their service. This fee is capped at EUR 10,000 for the entire scholarship period (excluding taxes).
- Value-Added Tax: If the service provided is taxed, the consultancy fee will be increased by the applicable sales tax rate (currently 20%).
Note: Scholarship recipients are responsible for their own accommodation costs during the consultancy period. If feasible, the OeNB may help find accommodation in Vienna.
Eligibility Criteria
- Requirements: To apply for the Scholarship, candidates need a PhD or equivalent degree, with published work and research in specified fields.
- Nationality and Age: People of any nationality can apply, and there’s no age limit.
- Individual Applications: Only applications from individuals are accepted. You can’t apply for more than one scholarship from the Klaus Liebscher program.
- Expertise and Integration: Eligible candidates should be experienced experts in economic research and well-connected in their research community.
- Active Employment: Applicants must prove that they are currently employed by a research institution during their application and for the scholarship period.
- Previous Recipients: Those who have received this scholarship before cannot apply again or renew their application.
- ECB Employees: Employees of the European Central Bank or other central banks in the European System of Central Banks are not eligible for this scholarship.

- A letter of Motivation, including a sign of the time frame, is visualized for the consultancy.
- A detailed consultancy proposal
- A description of current research topics and activities
- A CV
- An up-to-date list of publications (or an extract therefrom)
- The names of two references that the OeNB may contact to acquire additional data about the candidate.
- Evidence of basic income
- Written confirmation by the home institution that the Scholarship
- The candidate isn’t infringing upon the candidate’s work contract with the home organization.
