Scholarships in Russia Without IELTS: How the Government Quota Works
The main route to free study in Russia for international students is the Russian Government quota (tuition-free placement). You apply online through the official portal education-in-russia.com. The application asks you to state your language skills, but most programmes are taught in Russian, so IELTS is often not the deciding factor. Students who do not speak Russian can choose a one-year preparatory Russian language course before their main programme.
How to Apply: Step by Step
- Register on education-in-russia.com and confirm your email.
- Create a new application in your personal account.
- Fill in your personal data, passport details and previous education.
- Choose your study format, level, field of study and between 1 and 6 universities.
- State your Russian, foreign and native language skills, and tick the preparatory course box if you need Russian training.
- Upload your documents as .jpeg, .png or .pdf files of up to 10 MB each.
- Print, sign and scan the application, upload it, and submit it for review.
Tips for a Strong Application
- Choose your 6 universities carefully. Mix well-known universities with less competitive ones.
- Add any Olympiad results or other achievements. The form has a section for them.
- Decide whether you would accept a paid place if you do not win a free one. The form asks this.
- Plan for a year of Russian if your programme is taught in Russian.
- Check entry and visa rules for your country with the nearest Russian House or embassy.
