Applicants are now invited to apply for the SMART Scholarship in USA 2026. This offer is for international students from selected countries. The scholarship opportunities are fully funded by the Department of Defense in the USA.
The DoD scholarships are for the academic session 2026. SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation. The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program offers two scholarships for STEM students – the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship).
Scholarships are awarded for 1 year to a maximum of 5 years of funding, depending on degree requirements. The scholarships are for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. Students pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) subjects can apply for these scholarships. Eligibility Requirements
- Be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
- Be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2027
- Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be currently pursuing, or intend to pursue in fall 2026, a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a SMART STEM discipline*
- Planning to attend, or enrolled in, a regionally accredited U.S. college or university
- Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance**
- Be requesting between 1 and 5 years of degree funding. Degree funding will start in August 2026
- Complete summer internships for awards greater than 1.5 years
- Accept a one-for-one post-graduation service commitment as a civilian employee of the Department of War
Required Documents
- A High School Certificate or the equivalent of 12 years of schooling is required.
- Transcripts of Bachelor’s Degrees are mandatory for Master’s Degrees.
- Student’s Passport
- A concise resume/CV
- Statement of Purpose.
- Study plan or research proposal. (Only for the Master’s and Ph.D. students )
- Two letters of recommendation

The Closing date to apply online for the SMART Scholarship in the USA 2026 is at the end of December.

All applications must be submitted by the deadline, which is at 5:00 p.m. EST on the first Friday in December. You can monitor the status of your application in your portal under your name. Your application status will be one of the following:
In-Progress: You have not completed all required sections
Submitted: You have completed all required sections, clicked submit, and are awaiting program receipt of reference letters.
Complete: You have completed all sections, clicked submit, the program office has received your references and your application is ready to be evaluated.
